Autos Q & A: Oil Change

  • How often do I really need an oil change?
  • Hop into a time travel machine and land squarely in the middle of the America's past and you will find that experts suggested an oil change for your car as often as every 1000 miles. Engine improvements lengthened that time to 3000 miles. Today you can even find experts who say an oil change is only needed every 5000 to 7500 miles. The point of changing your car's oil is to increase performance of those tiny parts that are subject to the effects of friction. These effects are, in turn, dependent upon a number of external factors that can include everything from the type of vehicle you drive to the weather conditions in which you drive to how much driving you do.

Driving in colder weather, for example, means you should schedule an oil change more frequently than if you are driving in a hot climate. If your driving takes you on long distances a few times a week or month you can get away with changing the oil less often than those who only make short trips. The reason that regular oil changes are indicated is because over time the performance of your engine gets short-circuited by the build-up of sludge. One good way to determine whether you can live with an oil change every 7500 miles or should stick with 3000 mile model is to take an active part in demanding to see what the state of your oil use looks like after a change.
