Amazing Pet Stories

From rescuing their owners from drowning in a lake, to performing the Heimlich maneuver during a major emergency, amazing pet stories continue to capture our attention as we learn how much dogs and cats help us and even save lives. Rescue dogs aren't the only type of pets that have helped their masters save themselves from a challenging situation; today's most amazing pet stories include cats who play hero by notifying owners of an intruder, and stories of a parrot that saved its owner from a fire simply by attracting attention to the hazard and helping the household become aware of the situation. Most recently, the owners of a dog named Toby prove that our canine friends are often much smarter than we think they are.

Debbie Parkhurst of Maryland recently experienced a miracle when her dog, Toby helped her survive a choking incident after a piece of an apple got stuck in her throat. She was unable to remove the apple chunk on her own and soon stopped breathing as a result. She attempted the Heimlich maneuver to no avail, but Toby sensed that something was wrong and jumped on her chest to 'perform' the equivalent by pulling Debbie to the ground and putting pressure on her ribcage, the apple chunk came out. Toby is an adopted dog, now a pet to a loving family that would have seen dark days ahead had he not been rescued from a street dumpster at his birth. The 2-year-old golden retriever is a healthy and seemingly a very intelligent dog that has become a blessing to Debbie and a small town hero for those that know him.

Training pets to become protectors is easier when the dog, cats or birds have certain characteristics and hereditary patterns. Even when pets are domesticated and trained to live in a household, their natural instinct prevails in an emergency situation. Pets are often deemed with superb intuition and sensory skills, allowing them to sense something out of place well before their masters do. This can be an especially helpful trait for pet owners who are elderly and need extra protection; not only can pets alert their owners to a harmful situation, they can even prevent one from happening.

Hundreds of pet owners share their amazing pet stories online, allowing others to learn how their pets have saved lives and those of others. Discussion forums, blogs and pet communities highlight amazing pet stories that have changed their lives or made an impact on someone they've cared about. Dog owners who insist that their puppy 'knew' an intruder was in the house well before they did, or dogs that jumped into a swimming pool to save a drowning child, are just a few examples of heroic steps undertaken by our much loved family members. Some owners attribute their pet's miracles to God, while others concur that coincidence and their highly intelligent pet were at play. In any situation, these small miracles that can help save lives and protect pet owners from trouble are invaluable and a chance to learn some valuable lessons.

Experts have long researched how pets and small animals in a household develop their intelligence, skills and 'sixth sense'. While some of this may be learned behavior, especially for rescue dogs and other highly-trained pets at a young age, other situations are purely instinctual. Pets of all breeds, sizes and ages seem to have an intrinsic ability to foresee situations and circumstances. There is no better proof than some of the most amazing pet stories we see and hear about in our everyday lives. Whether for self protection and safety, unconditional love or simply to keep close by in case of an emergency situation, having a pet can lead to many small miracles - some that may even save our lives.
