Pets Q & A: Dogs lick

  • Why do dogs like to lick people?
  • Many people like to act as though their dog is kissing them when his slathering their face with its tongue. In fact, that concept is not far removed from the reality. Dogs lick people as a substitute for their lost mother. A dog that grows up among its family members frequently licks them the way that dogs taken away as puppies lick human beings. A dog lick is a sign of affection, as well as a sign of respect and understanding of their place within the familial hierarchy. Not all dogs lick people in equal measure. The amount of face licking that a dog engages in is dependent not on how much affection is being shown, but on the independence of the dog itself. A dog that has been significantly less socialized will therefore lick less than a dog that otherwise expresses an outgoing personality. As for the hygiene question, a dog's lick on your face can in many respects, based on individual circumstances, be no less unhealthy than kissing another person. Studies have even show a psychological boost in mood among some people when confronted with an aggressively lovable dog.
