Pets Q & A: Why are vet bills so high?
- Why are vet bills so high?
- Vet bills are high for many of the same reasons that other health care costs are so high. Just like your family doctor, vets also have student loans to pay off, as well as high insurance costs, equipment purchases and other expenditures associated with becoming a physician. Veterinarians must also maintain a staff-including an emergency overnight staff in some cases-and not only pay for office space, but also lab equipment. Indeed, pet doctors carry an overhead that even the family physician does not have to worry about: how many patients must stay overnight in the back room of your general practitioner? The fact is that most vets bear more in common with a hospital than a local doctor's office. Patients must remain on hand, as well as medication and waste facilities. All these costs combine to make it seem as though keeping your pet healthy costs more than keeping yourself healthy, but that is mostly an illusion. Next time you complain about the cost of a visit to the doctor, compare itself instead to a visit to the hospital and the difference will become evident.
